Mahindra Electric Origin SUVs has officially acknowledged a fire incident involving one of its BE 6 electric vehicles in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh. The incident, which has drawn attention amid growing concerns around EV safety, is currently under investigation by the company.
According to Mahindra, preliminary analysis of on-board sensor data and software diagnostics indicates that the vehicle’s high-voltage battery was not the cause of the fire. The company stated that all battery parameters were found to be within normal operating limits before the incident.
Before the fire broke out, the vehicle reportedly detected abnormally high tyre temperature and alerted the driver through the vehicle’s warning systems. As part of its built-in safety protocols, the BE 6 automatically restricted speed and initiated a controlled shutdown of key systems, safely bringing the vehicle to a halt without any immediate malfunction.
Mahindra’s initial assessment suggests that the fire may have originated from prolonged simultaneous application of the accelerator and brake pedals.
This condition can lead to repeated wheel spin, causing excessive heat buildup in the affected wheel and surrounding components.
The company indicated that such overheating could potentially trigger a fire under extreme circumstances.
The automaker has clarified that this assessment is preliminary and emphasized that a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the precise root cause of the incident.
Mahindra is expected to share detailed findings once the investigation is completed.
The incident has sparked discussions within the automotive industry and among EV consumers, particularly around driver behavior, safety system responses, and the need for clearer communication on EV fire incidents.
As electric vehicle adoption continues to rise in India, such cases underline the importance of transparent investigations and data-backed explanations to maintain consumer confidence.
Mahindra has reiterated its commitment to safety and stated that it is cooperating with all relevant stakeholders to ensure a thorough and accurate root cause analysis.
